Middle-Eastern Delicacies

Baklava at Persis, Harvey Nichols

Countries of the Middle-East might have gotten some bad press throughout the years, but sweet Middle-Eastern delicacies will never get a word of bad press from Haut Appétit! Baklava in particular has been my Achilles heel when it comes to sweet cravings over the years - sugar syrup, cinnamon, puff pastry, and nuts have never gone together so well in such a delicate and divine way since its creation, some centuries ago. And I figure, if something has been around since the Ottoman Empire, then it must be good.

If you haven't yet sampled the crisp, light, and gooey (yes, all at once) Middle-Eastern delight, then you get a slap on the wrist and an order to go try one! As I'm in London for the summer, I chose my top three Middle-Eastern bakeries in London that are the next best things to flying to Lebanon....

The Arabica Food & Spice Company

I visited The Arabica Food & Spice Company stand in the Selfridges Food Hall, but they also have an outpost at South London's Borough Market. Excellent variety... End a shopping spree at Selfridges with a sweet treat at their food stand.

Persis is dedicated to the finest quality Baklava using only top quality ingredients. Elegant little nests of nuts and pastry dotted the glass case, beautiful enough to earn them a spot right beside the French Macarons...

Green Valley

I had been looking for a more authentic display of Middle-Eastern treats and after some exhaustive inquiry, a food writer turned chef Dave Ahern of GourmetGuy Blog suggested I try this place... I'm glad I followed his advice. A veritable smorgasbord of everything exceptionally delightful of the mouth. Hold me back!

I think I need Baklava towers in my home...

During the summer months, most Middle-Eastern countries experience unbearable heat. The women turn to loose fitting garb not only for modesty, but also to keep cool. I am inspired... And completely obsessed with these Zara kaftans. Modesty doesn't have to mean boring... try elegant and playful. The Standard Culture blog also caught me wearing it in NY - click to see!

Shoes and Kaftan Zara, scarf Allegra London, bag Prada.
